Watercolour Study of a Gothic Ruined Abbey c.1900 Charcoal drawing gothic sketch gothic watercolour %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
The very well executed study in watercolours, of a medieval abbey, gothic monastery or church ruin, depicted at eventide, with rolling hills and trees to the background with the sun setting, presented its original gilded frame and signed ‘F radley’ (?) lower left, the whole being glazed, and surviving from the zeniths of the nineteenth century.

The condition of the study is nigh on perfect with the glazing having protected it thus far. The original frame is splendidly decorative and shows wear to the gilding.

The execution here is fabulous, with the use of shadow and light being used very effectively, though we cannot find any details on the artist, as the signature requires further research which may well prove fruitful.

Hauntingly beautiful, the ruined abbeys of England, Scotland, and Wales stand majestically defiant against the elements a reminder of a medieval past governed by work, study, and prayer.

A moody and atmospheric delight.
