UNIQUE GIFTS nudes - cigarette cases 19th century French silver silver wedding / 25th anniversary gifts
A highly collectible and extremely rare sterling silver cigarette case adorned with the most collectible of themes, the female nude. The remarkable condition of this case and the fact it is a collaboration between the famed medalist / sculptor Pierre Firmin Lasserre and Adolphe Frontin makes this even more of a truly remarkable 'find'. There is much more work on this case than one would normally see and this is such a reflection of the masterful skill that these two gentlemen possessed. The waves are minutely detailed and this work carries on right up to the horizon on both sides of the case. The power of the sea, the sea foam, the gulls all perfectly portrayed. The beautiful nude has her modesty as waves cover part of her. A celebration of the female form - she is perfectly proportioned. The expression on her face is exquisitely beautiful and her hair cascades down her back. She is gazing at a child like figure who is holding a shell aloft which contains a huge pearl. Again this figure and the third figure too are perfectly executed. The third, a young female has her hair swept up on top of her head, perfectly relaxed in the sea as she blows on a conch shell. Below her the signature of Pierre Firmin Lasserre - bold and easy to read and who would not want to put their name to this spectacular case. The base is also superb. The power of the sea captured - eight sea gulls hunting for food. All clasps and hinges work perfectly. What a surprise to see the vermeil interior - the repoussage in the most vibrant original gold. I do not think this case has been used to store cigarettes. It is a fine collector's piece. The lid and base have the boar's head hallmarks and on the lower corner the case bears the maker's mark of Adolphe Frontin - ‘deau etoiles, une en haut et une en bas du nom’ - (two stars one on top & one underneath the name FRONTIN).
This rare collector's piece measures 8.5 X 6.7 and weighs 75.2 grams.
I have to say I failed to capture the beauty of this case - it is more detailed in person, the silver is brilliant and the vermeil absolutely outstanding.
