ALSO 54 pages of mostly original poetry, verses, riddle and rhymes and literary quotes or remarks. Including some epithets by or from Charles Caleb Colton "Colton's Lacon" (an eccentric cleric and writer) possibly by Philip Goldney or Susanna Milward?. Approx 120 pages or more of content of OTHER material in total. And Includes 5 Miniature watercolours one of Sir Walter Scott (under movable lid in locket form) + another two humorous movable watercolours, one of a barbers shop with a dissolving picture overlay and one of a boy sweep in a doorway with street behind which opens out also & a most wonderful and beautiful miniature watercolour of an acorn branch on card. Some of the images and drawings have movable parts, butterflies & flowers. Spine perished and top board detached, contents Very Good, Colours bright and all items clean. Most of the artworks done in full vibrant gouache and watercolour of character heads are possibly by PHILIP GOLDNEY.
NOTE: Philip Goldney (1802-1857) 2nd son of Thomas Goldney of Goldney House Clifton, who was killed in the Indian Mutiny of 1857.
He was a Captain in the 4th Native Infantry at Sind. Stationed as a captain with the East India Company at Sultanpoor. And at the time of the uprising was after reviewing his options as senior officer at the station planned a defensive strategy. The station was attacked and overwhelmed with a surrender. He and his surviving troop left in a group of 4 boats with a safe passage guarantee from the leading Indian mutineer officer. Later with his troops he was fired on from the bank, abandoning the boats on an island about 30 miles from where he started and seeing his men escape safely. He was believed killed under fire although his body was never found Susanna Milward was related to the above (her uncle). She was the daughter of Charles Samuel Milward of Middlesex and was baptised in St Paul's, Covent Garden in 1815. Her mother was Susanna Maria Bond whose sister also married a Milward as did another sister so 3 marriages between these 2 families. THERE is also a Hand-drawn coloured map of Africa done by Amelia Liptrap (cousin) aged 9 at Southampton September 1827 with the interior of the continent blank (undiscovered regions) or with long disused names for places at the cape and the north and coastal outlines. Poem of a "Convict Ship" by J.K.Hervey + other poetical and prose work in copperplate by Henry Nelson Goldney + D. P. Llewellyn + Mrs Varlo + Lord Byron (after) + Mrs Bond + Davenant Cecil (John Clare The water Poet) + Ms B. Neeld + Charles Prater + Miss Marchmont + Other contributors of some original material and copyists of some 19th century writers and poets all written by the above and others not signed. The watercolours and items are by family members and the very best here we think are by the officer killed in 1857 "Philip Goldney", other material where a name is seen we mention here also Charles Milward (the father?) + Sarah Ballard + E. Rushdale + TWO superb graphite sketches by Charles Galpin + An ink sketch of a dancing bear 1834 by F.A.H.? + Others by Charles Milward etc, TWO pasted in tiny microscopic hand written copies of The Apostles Creed and the Ten Commandments. both the size of 1 inch-1.5 inches in diameter or length. THE quality of the watercolours cannot be overstated. WE WOULD BE HAPPY to send images of individual images for closer inspection if asked. NOT amalgamated from various or later sources. All genuine from one source.
