Art Nouveau Silver Sugar Tongs, Roden Bros, Canada
This is a very stylish pair of Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Sugar Tongs from Canada. The tongs are made in Toronto by Roden Brothers and date to between around 1890 and 1910. Thomas and Frank Roden founded the company in Toronto, Ontario in 1891, becoming a limited company in the early 1910s. They remained in business until 1953 when they were bought by famous Canadian silversmiths Henry Birks & Sons.
These are bird claw type sugar tongs with a distinctive Art Nouveau design down each arm and onto the top of the bird claw. They are well made tongs in a good gauge of silver, which would be perfectly usable today or make a nice addition to any collection.
Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents and only the most superficial of surface wear. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tongs are 8.2cm / 3.25" long and weigh in at a very respectable 14.3g / 0.5oz.
The marks on the inside of one of the arms are the classic Roden Brothers marks showing the gothic "R" in a rectangle, the word STERLING and the silver grade 925 plus the pseudo lion passant hallmark for Sterling Silver, which is the English Sterling standard mark but had no legal status in Canada.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
Overseas customers please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
