George III Silver Sugar Tongs, Thomas Wallis, 1802
This is an attractive pair of George III Sterling Silver Sugar Tongs in the Old English pattern with Bright Cut decoration along both arms and pin decoration on the back of each bowl. The initials P S B are elegantly engraved on the bridge of the tongs.
The sugar tongs are made in London by Thomas Wallis Jr and date to 1802. Thomas Wallis Sr set up the firm in around 1758 and was a general silversmith producing a wide range of items. His son Thomas Jr joined his father as an apprentice and eventually took over the business in 1777. Later in 1810, Jonathan Hayne became his partner until 1820 and the firm would later become Hayne & Cater.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 220 years of teatime use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sugar tongs are 13.4cm / 5.3ins long and weigh in at a respectable 24.7g / 0.87oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the insides of the arms are nice and clear to read. On one arm is the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letter G for 1802 and the George III duty mark, whilst on the other arm is the script style T W makers' mark for Thomas Wallis Jr.
