J Burrell Smith Continental Mountain Scene

Photos

Description

We have for sale a lovely painting by the well respected Victorian artist James Burrell Smith (otherwise known as Waterfall Smith) 1822-1897.

This lovely painting depicts a continental mountain scene as viewed form a mountain village with a lady in a doorway though an arched gateway. The painting is indistinctly signed and dated by the artist to the bottom left hand corner. Unfortunately the date is very hard to read, but the painting will date from between 1850 and 1881 when he traveled extensively in Europe, and is likely to date from his travels in Italy.

The painting is 19.25 (48.9cm) high and 14.5 inches (36.8cm) wide including the frame. The painting is in a very good condition and has just come back from being re-framed.

About the Artist

James Burrell Smith (1822-1897), often referred to as Waterfall Smith, was a very highly regarded Victorian artist who painted in both watercolours and oils. As the name suggests he was well known for his excellent depictions of waterfalls, rapids and riverside scenes. He was born in the South of England, but moved to Northumberland in 1843 where he was trained by the Highland Lanscape artist Thomas Miles Richardson Snr (1784-1848).

James Burrell Smith travelled extensively across the UK and Europe and exhibited in Suffolk Street, London from 1850-1881. Examples of his work can be seen in the Alnwick Castle Collection.
