George III Corner Wash Stand

Description

This corner basin stand was made in England at the end of the 18th century. Several similar designs can be found in the publications of Sheraton, Hepplewhite and their contemporaries during the 1790s and such a device would have been commonplace in the bedchambers of the wealthy. This example, which is made of mahogany, has a number of features that set it apart from others including the satinwood panel and stringing, the inclusion of a small central bow-fronted drawer and the contour of the legs – a shape first illustrated by Sheraton in 1792. The washbasin and soap dishes are later additions and there have been some minor restoration but the stand is in good condition for its age and the repairs are almost invisible. The basin stand would suit a downstairs cloakroom or similar space. Item No. 0027.
