An Unusual Antique Ethnic Ceremonial RIGA Robe / Gown Textile

c. early 20th century

This fascinating and very large / oversized gown is of West African tribal origin (Yoruba or Hausa) and potentially of Islamic interest.

The main material is from an ivory-coloured cotton, with very nicely embroidered abstract and geometric designs in a contrasting metallic colour.

It has a number of old historic marks and stains, as clearly shown in the photo, however these marks are mainly to the reverse and the piece still displays well to the front. Please read full condition below.

A highly unusual and decorative object, ideal for a collection.

Dimensions -

Large, approximately 135 cms drop, from the neck down to the lower hem.

Condition -

There is some discolouration and historic water staining to the lower right, back of the robe. Also two small rust spots to one hem. Overall wear with a few loose and pulled threads in places. The piece has been very carefully hand cleaned and dried and is now free from surface dirt and essentially presents as clean and fresh, but with some historic marking remaining as described and photographed.
