Description

A Victorian mahogany microscope slide cabinet. Raised on small turned feet with a pair of doors, with flame mahogany panels, enclosing an interior of trays and a drawer all containing a variety of bottles, microscope slides, small gilt lacquered brass microscope and assorted other interesting objects. Bearing a label of the owners Charles and Harriet Elcock. In good and original condition. 590mm high, 610mm wide and 330mm deep. Circa 1870.

Charles Elcock was a professional microscope slide maker, operating from Belfast, Ireland between from the 1880's until the first decade of the 20th century. Elcock specialized in mounting foraminifera, producing slides that are both scientifically useful and aesthetically pleasing. He was curator of Belfast Art Gallery and Museum, and his wife Harriet Sophia (born Green) were both Quakers.
