Description

An outstanding 18th century bureau bookcase attributed to Vile & Cobb. Raised on bold ogee bracket feet above which are three long and two short drawers with rococo handles and escutcheons. The fall front opens to reveal a wonderful interior of archaded pigeon hole, small drawers and a central cupboard which pulls out and has secret compartments hidden in the back. The upper section has mirrored doors, with candle slides under and foliate carving to the top of the doors. The bookcase is topped off with a fine Swan-neck cornice with carved moldings, frieze and patera. 2520mm high, 1140mm wide and 650mm deep. English. Circa 1760.

William Vile and John Cobb were in partnership between 1750 and 1764 from premises at 72 St. Martin’s Lane and held the Royal Warrant from 1761 until April 1764. Much of their finest furniture was supplied to the Royal Household.
