Description

Superb pair of Japanese Meiji period Shibayama panels c.1890. Depicting a pair of splendid looking cockerels, an animal of special significance to ‘The land of the rising sun’. With extravagant plumage and long tail feathers, perched amongst tree blossom and featuring a little butterfly to each. Beautifully realised in layers of carved shell, mother of pearl and bone to stand in high relief against the black lacquered ground. Presented in the original red lacquered oval frames also painted with cherry blossom. Good condition with only minor wear
