Description

This is an attractive late Victorian Sterling Silver Belt Buckle. The two part buckle has a pierced rococo design of intertwining foliage and a straightforward catch and loop clasp.

The buckle was made in London by silversmith Walter Raymond and dates to 1897. Walter Raymond traded as Walter Russell and registered his first mark at Goldsmith’s Hall in London in May 1894 under that name. However this was quickly withdrawn and a new mark registered under his actual name of Walter Raymond in August 1894. He was active through the rest of the 1890s but then seems to have ceased trading.

Overall condition is good however there is a small floral detail at the bottom point of one half of the buckle which has snapped off at some point in its life. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

When joined, the buckle is 11.3cm / 4.4ins across and 6.5cm / 2.5ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 55.8g / 1.97oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, at the top of the buckle on the front, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter b for 1897 and the W R makers' mark for Walter Raymond.
