Westminster Chiming Repeating Carriage Clock
Photos
.
This is a most rare and beautiful carriage antique clock of French manufacture dating from the last half of the 19th century which Westminster chimes all the quarters on a nest of 4 bells and when repeated it also strikes the current hour on a coiled gong.
Such antique clocks are very rare indeed and most collectors would be fortunate to see one example in a lifetime. A similar , but plainer, clock is illustrated in Derek Roberts carriage clock book page 224 and 225
The images should show prospective buyers all they need to see but a personal inspection is very welcome.
This is a full size clock that is 8 1/4 inches high with the handle raised. It is 7 1/4 inches tall with the handle down and 4 1/8the. The depth is 3 1/2 inches.
The sharp sided case is in excellent condition having been totally dismantled and carefully cleaned in an ultra sonic tank which has removed all the discoloured laquer but left 95 % of the original gilding clean and bright. The dial masking and two side panels are beautifully fretted and engraved with foliage and birds. The panels are mounted on a gilded brass plate which can be seen through the fretts.
The overall condition is excellent being fully restored and the movement professionally serviced. It will delight the most discerning client.
The fine quality 8 day duration French movement retains its original large silvered platform escapement with lever escapement and is in perfect working order.
The complicated mechanism has a third train which is used for the Westminster chiming on 4 small bells at the bottom on the movement. It chimes on each quarter and on the hours are struck on a coiled gong. There is a push button repeat which will repeat the appropriate quarter and the the current hour.
This clock was manufactured to be of the highest quality and would have been very enormously expensive when new.It has obviously been well cared for and cherished all its life.
