Victorian Silver Teapot, Joseph Rodgers, 1899
Here we have a superb large late Victorian Sterling Silver Teapot in the Art Nouveau style. The teapot is basically oval with two sets of ribs on each side, which are continued onto the hinged lid. The spout has a design of flowing lines and foliage which is mirrored in the foliage at the top of the four scroll feet. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The teapot was made in Sheffield by well known silversmiths Joseph Rodgers & Sons and dates to 1899. Joseph Rodgers set up his firm in 1843, becoming Joseph Rodgers & Sons in 1862, when his son George became a partner in the business. They were very accomplished silversmiths and electroplaters with manufacturing in Sheffield and a showroom in London's Holborn Viaduct, home to many high end retailers at the time. They remained in business into at least the early 1970s.
Condition is very good with just one very shallow ding on the body below the hallmarks plus the overall superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 125 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
This is a good size teapot measuring 28cm / 11ins from spout to handle and 12.5cm / 4.9ins across the body. It stands 17cm / 6.7ins high and weighs in at a very substantial 685g / 24.16oz. The capacity is 1,052ml / 1.85pints (UK).
The hallmarks, on the upper part of the body, are a little rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the Gothic date letter g for 1899 and the J.R makers' mark and cross & star trademark for Joseph Rodgers & Sons. There is a second partial set of the lion passant and the makers' mark on the inside of the lid.
Shipping in the UK is £18 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the teapot.
