Victorian Silver Plate Teapot, R. Stewart, Glasgow
This is a good quality late Victorian / Edwardian Silver Plate Bachelor Teapot. The teapot is in the melon shape popular in the late 19th century with the body standing on four paw feet and a high scrolling rim around the lid. The handle is c-shaped and has bone insulators to keep it cool. A letter S in elegant scrolling style is engraved on the side of the body.
The teapot is marked for retail jeweller and silversmith Robert Stewart of Argyle Street in Glasgow and dates to around 1900 / 1901. Founded in 1835 by brothers Allan & Robert Stewart it came under the sole control of Robert five years later. The business was continued by Robert's sons James & John until it finally closed in 1934. From 1884 the firm held the Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria as Goldsmiths, Jewellers and Watchmakers.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no significant plate loss on the outside and just a little wear to the base of the inside where tea has been stirred by many spoons for over a hundred years. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
