Victorian Silver Pin Cushion, Adie & Lovekin, 1890
This is a charming late Victorian Sterling Silver Pin Cushion in the form of a lady's shoe. The pin cushion is covered in olive green velvet and at some point later in its life a green stone has been fixed to the front of the bow.
The pin cushion was made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths Adie & Lovekin and dates to 1890. Founded in 1863 by James Adie and Alfred Lovekin, the firm specialised in flatware, fancy goods, silver jewellery and particularly sewing related items. Their pin cushions are highly collectable. The original partners passed away in 1913 and 1912 and the firm carried on until around 1930.
Condition is very good with just a couple of truly tiny dings plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 130 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pin cushion is 8.1cm / 3.2ins long, 2.3cm / 0.9ins across and 2.5cm / 0.98ins high. The silver shoe weighs in at 31.7g / 1.1oz and all in it weighs 37.2g / 1.3oz.
The hallmarks, on one side of the shoe, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter q for 1890 and the A & L Ld makers' mark for Adie & Lovekin Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the pin cushion.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
