Victorian Silver Open Salt, Henry Wilkinson, 1882
This is a good quality Victorian Sterling Silver Open Salt of classical form with a reeded body, pedestal base and two arching handles. The interior of the salt is gilded, always a sign of quality.
The salt is made in Sheffield by Henry Wilkinson & Co and dates to 1882. Henry Wilkinson & Co started up around 1830 and produced a very wide range of good quality items. They remained in business until 1892 when they were bought by Walker & Hall.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected in an item of this age and use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The salt is 10.1cm / 3.9ins from handle to handle, 4.6cm / 1.8ins across the body and 5cm / 1.9ins high to the top of the handles. It weighs a respectable 37.1g / 1.3oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the side of the body are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter P for 1882, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the HW & Co makers' mark for Henry Wilkinson & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
