Here we have a very fine quality early Victorian Sterling Silver Ink Stand with its original Silver Mounted Cut Glass Inkwell. The ornate stand sits on four claw and ball feet. The central square base is surrounded by pierced scrollwork and the scalloped rim is decorated with clusters of roses. The deep cut glass inkwell is pyramid shaped with a square silver hinged lid. There is a panel for an inscription or initials which is blank.

The ink stand was made in Sheffield by Henry Wilkinson & Co and dates to 1851. Henry Wilkinson entered his first mark at the Sheffield assay office in 1831, although the family had been producing Old Sheffield Plate for a number of years prior to that. They made good quality silverware and electroplated items. The firm presented their wares at the Great Exhibition in 1851 and opened a London showroom in 1857. In 1892 the business was bought by Walker & Hall.

Condition is good, with just one tiny split in a corner of the pierced section plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 170 years of good service. There is one little nibble at the corner of the base of the glass inkwell where it fits into the stand. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The ink stand measures 17.5cm / 6.9ins by 16cm / 6.3ins and with the inkwell in place it stands 11cm / 4.3ins high. The stand by itself weighs in at a substantial 197g / 6.95oz of solid Sterling Silver and all in it weighs 587g / 20.7oz.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the base and the rim of the collar, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter H for 1851, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the H W & Co makers' mark for Henry Wilkinson & Co.
