Victorian Silver Cream Jug, Thomas White, 1879
Here we have a superb quality Victorian Sterling Silver Cream Jug with a gilt interior. The jug is pear shaped and the body is covered with bands of exceptional quality, highly detailed engraving of flowers and foliage. The cartouche on one side has a crest of a horse's head whilst the one on the other side is blank. This really is a stunning piece.
The cream jug is made in London by silversmith Thomas White and dates to 1879. Thomas White was active between the 1860s and the 1890s. He had a small business but produced pieces of consistently high quality and his work is always worth looking out for.
Condition is good with just a couple of very shallow bruises to the lower part of the body that are largely disguised by the pattern. The gilding to the interior has worn thin in a couple of places but still looks very striking. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The jug is of a good size and stands 10.3cm / 4ins high, is 9.8cm / 3.8ins from lip to handle and 7.7cm / 3ins in diameter at its widest part. It weighs a very substantial 200g / 7oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are crisp and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter D for 1879, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the T.W in a crimped rectangle makers' mark for Thomas White.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the jug.
