Victorian Bamboo & Rush-work Hall Cupboard
This lovely antique hall cupboard is an unusual piece. It dates from c.1870 and has a bamboo frame with woven rushwork over wooden panels. It has a lift-up wooden seat with storage beneath. The cupboard has metal brackets and coat hooks, which are probably replacements, and there is a spinning hook at the top. The seat retains its decorative metal handle. The piece would originally have had a rail at the top with a material curtain to cover the contents, but the rail and curtain are now missing.
Condition Overall this handsome piece is in usuable condition, but does have some wear consistent with age and use. As is mentioned above the front rail and curtain are missing. The coat hooks show signs of having been replaced and moved over the years at are not all matching. The seat / lid needs strengthening. There are various areas where the rushwork is worn and damaged and there are some small holes. The metal bracket at the bottom on the right-hand side has come apart. There is some shrinkage cracking to the bamboo in places, and some areas of damage to the bamboo at the top edge. The piece is overall dusty and grubby and would benefit from a careful clean.
The approx. measurements are as follows
Overall - 194cm high, 96cm wide, 49cm deep (to maximums). Further images are available. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any queries. Viewing is welcome, but please contact us before travelling as we are only open by appointment.
