Tea Sample Box / Caddy by Chapman Son & Co. London
A rare find, something I haven't come across in over 30 years dealing in antique English boxes. The box is made from solid English Oak and brass bound in a military / campaign style with a flush carrying handle to the top.
The joy of course inside the box with a fitted interior with 12 labelled compartments for small quantities of teas clearly made for travel in a campaign / grand tour manner.
The box has clearly been tucked away and unused for many years, the interior being fresh and original with the rich blue velvet lining to the lid fitting tightly to keep the lids in place, impressions of the lid finials can be seen on the fabric.
There is a label for the manufacturer / retailer, Chapman Son & Co., Charterhouse Buildings, London EC. A company found 1798 and well renowned for cabinetry and fancy goods. This box dates the Victorian era, around 1860 / 1880.
The lock is a Bramah, a true sign of luxury and quality, the box comes with a working key.
Excellent condition measuring 14" x 11 1/2" x 3 3/4".
