T. Matherson Quality Watercolour Coast Of Devon
We are pleased to offer this beautiful and delicately toned watercolour by the artist T. Matherson, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and entitled it verso Coast of Devon. We think it possible that the hill in the painting might be St. Catherine's Tor near Hartland Quay on the North Devon Coast. A spar from a ship has been washed up onto the beach and there is a large flock of seagulls in the sky.
This artist, whose work appears to come to the market every so often, is a bit of a mystery, as he or she does not appear in any of our reference books, which means that the work wasn't exhibited at any major exhibitions. The watercolours that have been to auction all appear to be of the South West of England and coastal, but, although we have made a search of the Births & Deaths Registers and Census Records for this area, we can find no trace of a Matherson living there or, indeed, a Matherson who was an artist, living anywhere. It is possible that the name may be a pseudonym, but if so, we have no idea who used it.
The painting has been newly double mounted in two tone acid-free mountboard and is newly framed in a 1 1/4" gilt frame to suit. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size: 15 5/8" x 9 3/4" - 39.7cm x 24.8cm
Frame size: 22 7/8" x 16 7/8" - 58.1cm x 42.9cm
Medium: Watercolours
Condition: Very good. There is no foxing or fading. The mounts and frame are new.
