CIRCLE OF Artist Martin van Meytens II [ The Younger ].

A very good quality portrait depicting her majesty wearing a lace trimmed scarlet red dress with an ermine mantle, and miniature portrait pinned to her dress by a blue bow.

She has diamond jewels and flowers in her hair. Depicted in the miniature is Queen Ulrika Eleonora of Denmark.

She was the youngest child of King Charles XI and Ulrika Eleonora of Denmark and named after her mother. After the death of her brother King Charles XII in 1718, she claimed the throne.

ABOUT SITTER
Louisa Ulrika of Prussia was born on 24 July 1720 as the daughter of Frederick William I of Prussia and his wife Sophia Dorothea of Hanover. She was their tenth child. At the age of three, she was put in the care of a French governess by the name of Mademoiselle de Jeaucourt with her sister Sophie. Her interests were literature, science, architecture, music, politics and fashion.

Her first child was a stillborn son in 1745. Three more sons followed in 1746, 1748 and 1750. In 1753, the couple’s only daughter was born.

She became Queen consort in March 1751 upon the death of King Frederick I. She and her husband were crowned together, and both swore to reject, “arbitrary and despotic powers.” It wasn’t long before Louisa Ulrika was fretting about the limitations imposed on the royal authority in Sweden.5 She formed a court party around aristocrats and young officers to restore the royal authority,

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Martin van Meytens [ Circle Of ] (24 June 1695 – 23 March 1770) was a Swedish-Austrian painter who painted members of the Royal Court of Austria such as Marie Antoinette, Maria Theresa of Austria, Francis I, Holy Roman Emperor, the Emperor's family and many Royals and members of the aristocracy.

Meytens was one of the most significant Austrian painters of representative Baroque courtly portrait, and through his pupils and followers his influence remained alive and widespread for a long time throughout the whole Empire. His personal virtues, varied interests, erudition and pleasant manners were highly appreciated by his contemporaries.

The cameo on the chest was a typical trade mark of the artist.

This portrait has been presented in a stunning most decorative and detailed gilt gesso moulded period frame finished in a rich gold colour.A frame of this quality and rarity would be hard to buy today and could achieve towards £500 if sold separately.
