Scarce 1880 Scottish 10” Fusee Dial Clock.
SUMMER SALE OFFER PRICE:
We present for consideration, this scarce and wonderful 10” dial single chain fusee wall antique clock, by Scottish maker, James Hardy of Aberdeen.
Born 1839 in Aberdeen, Hardy became a respected and widely known Scottish antique clock and watch maker in his earlier years. However, once in his 50’s, Hardy become an internationally famed as a prestige jeweller and silversmith under the name of “James Hardy & Co.” His company operated from exclusive retail outlets in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and London, and had registered silver maker hallmarks for Glasgow (from 1870) and London (from 1889).
In 1880, Hardy was residing with his mother at 1 Adelphi, Aberdeen, yet this clock would have been hand-crafted and assembled in Hardy’s antique jewellery outlet / workshop at nearby, 53 Union Street, Aberdeen. From there, and to offer some provenance on the clock, we believe it then spent the majority of its long life in an opulent family ancestral home at Chapel of Garioch, Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, a gateway to the Scottish Highlands.
The antique clocks wonderfully hand-turned roundhead face with boxed cabinet are made of Oak, with a hinged inspection door located on the side of the box and a turn catch hinged regulator door to the bottom of the box. The clock retains its original metal dial with black Roman numerals and the Hardy’s details, finished with its original pair of blued Spade hands, secured with a pinned collet. The clocks dial is then protected by a thick glaze mounted in a brass bezel.
Hardy commissioned the majority of his high-quality fusee movements from world famous German partner Winterhalder & Hofmeier of Schwarzenbach and this clock is no different, with a finely engineered 8-day single fusee chain driven movement set between rectangular plates and turned pillars. Stamped into the mechanisms’ front plate is serial number ‘24972’ (which helps date the clock), and on the backplate, the distinctive “W&H Sch” trademark. The clock comes with its original 70mm diameter brass pendulum bob and a brass winding key.
…A superb Victorian fusee dial timepiece of high-quality, character and proportion, from one of Scotland’s named and much sought-after clockmakers.
