Samuel Rayner 179?-1894 W/Colour Samuel Rayner 19th Century Victorian %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are delighted to offer for sale this early watercolour by the artist SAMUEL A RAYNER, 179?-1874, who has signed the painting with his customary initials S.R. in the lower right hand corner and dated it 1868. The painting depicts an historical scene of a castle, possibly Continental, with a herald, mounted on a grey horse, blowing his horn, which has a heraldic banner attached, on a very tall bridge across the moat of the castle. The drawbridge of the castle is raised. On the battlements of the castle, there are many armour clad solders, one of whom is holding a banner aloft. From two windows of the castle, boiling oil or water is being thrown at the herald.

We know that the date of the painting is correct, as pasted to the reverse is a copy of a London newspaper with an advertisement dated September, 1868. Please see photo. We also know that this painting although only signed with his initials was painted by Samuel Rayner, as our research has revealed that he painted two very similar paintings to this one, one of which was sold in St. Louis Missouri in 1997 for £700. Both of these paintings were of slightly different dimensions to ours.

SAMUEL A RAYNER, was born in the late 1790s, his exact year of birth is unknown and he died in Brighton in 1874, although he lived a part of his life in London. He was an architectural and historical genre painter who first exhibited in London in 1821. He was elected A.O.W.S. in February, 1845, but was expelled in 1851 after conviction on a serious charge of fraud! He continued to exhibit elsewhere. A few prints were made after his drawings in the 1820s. His style is very close to that of George Cattermole, although he tends to use much more bodycolour. His wife, son Richard M. Rayner and five daughters, Rose, Frances, Louise, Nancy and Margaret were all artists and, at least until his disgrace, he seems to have had a wide circle of artist friends. Louise Rayner is a very well listed artist whose works command thousands of pounds.

He published 'Sketches of Derbyshire Scenery' in 1830, 'The History and Antiquities of Haddon Hall' in 1836 and 'The History of Derby' in 1838. Examples of his work may be found at the British Museum, Williamson Art Gallery, Birkenhead, Coventry Art Gallery, Derby Art Gallery, and Ulster Museum.

Biographical details on Samuel Rayner may be found in The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood, and British Watercolour Artists by H. Mallalieu. Prices achieved for his works at auction may be found at artprice.com, findartinfo.com, artnet.com and in Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market.

The paintings is mounted with wash lines and is framed in a 3/4" antique gilt frame. It is ready to hang.
