Rare Oak and Brass 3 Bottle Coaching Tantalus
The finest quality late 19th century oak and brass miniature/small 3 bottle spirit decanter tantalus, made by Betjemann.
The polished brass handle locks in the upright position and the mounts for the hinge and lock are stamped with a crown and "The Tantalus" on one end and a crown and "Betjemann's Patent London 22799" to the other. (The patent we believe dates to the 1880s).
This miniature set was intended to be used by the traveller, hunting party, picnicking set along with other made for purpose items such as folding coaching antique tables. Complete and original, plus from a premier maker, these are very rare to find and certainly not easily found in this excellent condition.
There are three original cut crystal square spirit decanters, all in excellent condition (one stopper has a small nick to the underside lip (nothing major). The oak frame has the canted/ sloped corners and is mounted with good quality brass mounts. The item has been cleaned but not mechanically and has had no restoration, it is in excellent order all round, polished, gleaming and ready to go.
This is also interesting in that it has a dummy lock, the trigger mechanism works perfectly, the hinge and snap all perfect, upon examination (thinking the key was missing we had our locksmith check it over and it is simply a dummy lock face, no actual mechanism inside, so no worries about losing keys).
