Published 1806 Hand Coloured Etching John Bull
We are offering an antique satirical etching, hand coloured and trimmed outside the plate, entitled JOHN BULL ON A BED OF ROSES. The plate was made by Charles Williams, who was active 1802-1815, and published in July 1806 by William Holland, Cockspur Street, London. William Holland was a publisher of satirical and other prints and was at this address from the end of 1802 until 1815, the year of his death.
The etching depicts John Bull as a country yokel, lying on a bed of roses with vicious thorns. He is proclaiming-
Oh Lord! Oh Lord! if this be the Bed of Roses they make such a noise about, I'd sooner lye with the Old Sow and her Farrow in the Dog Days! My Dame will roar woundidly when she comes to bed! Ecod its as bad as lying on a Harrow upside down!
Apparently this caricature is all to do with reforms to the army.
There is a copy of this etching in the British Museum. Their registration number for the item is 1868,0808.7477.
There is one of these etchings available on google for £190, unframed.
