Pair of French paintings. Period 19th century.
Description: Pair of paintings with a religious background depicting the "penitent Magdalene" and "Madonna with Child" by Lieve du Morvain, both signed and dated lower left, oil on ivory.
The Magdalene is dated 1847 and is portrayed in her repentance in obsequious devotion, with hands clasped on her chest and gaze
languid and fervent, with very long red, wavy and silky hair. Around her the painter chooses to portray nothingness, the dark nude of a room isolates her and envelops her in mystical agony, focusing the viewer's gaze only on her physicality of her Saint.
The iconographic fortune of the Penitent Magdalene especially starting from the Renaissance has a fairly clear iconographic forerunner and it is the Penitent Magdalene by Titian of Florence or the same by Titian preserved in the Capodimonte museum in Naples, at which time the Saint is almost always portrayed breast naked, with long, luscious hair and a luminous youthful complexion, an image that seems intended more for the enjoyment of the eye than for devotional fervor.
In the collective imagination she became a sinner and at the same time a penitent, a prostitute and at the same time a saint,
her aura lives in the ambivalence of the sacred and the profane, in a changing balance between the sensuality of the sinner and her spiritual asceticism in repentance. We find all this in this masterpiece by Lieve du Murvain.
Even the Madonna and Child, dated 1848, finds possible prodromes in sixteenth-century Italian painting and is certainly inspired by Titian models, of which Lieve du Murvain was probably aware. The Virgin is dressed here according to the colors that the canonical iconography attributes to her, i.e. blue and pink, captured in the moment in which she wraps the Child in the whiteness of the linen cloth, filling the religious icon with human and universal values, typical of any mother to her child. Here too the scene is clearly detached from the almost monochrome background while a touching roll of linen makes its dignified appearance above the shelf where the artist's signature and date can be seen.
The choice of the ivory support is unusual, as is the choice of material for the beautiful coeval frames made of chiseled and gilded bronze. The frames are worthy of mention as they are characterized by an elaborate chiselling process.
