Pair Derby Porcelain Figures Deer, Doe & Stag c.1820
Very sweet pair of early 19th century Derby porcelain figures of recumbent doe and stag, c.1820. Set on shaped mounded bases with applied flowers and leaves and each with a bocage behind them. Sparsely decorated in gold with fancy collars, gilded hooves, facial detail and ears, tips of the antlers and some side markings to the stag. Incised number 3 to the base of each.
Provenance: Dennis G. Rice Collection, and illustrated in English Porcelain Animals Of The 19th Century, D. G. Rice, plate 127, page 156.
They measure 9cm (3 1/2") high and 5cm (2") deep. The stag is 8cm (3 1/8") wide and the doe 9cm (3 1/2").
Condition is very good overall: Small amounts of professional restoration to the antlers, the stag's left ear and the doe's right one and her back left foot, all done very well. A few very minor losses to the bocage of the stag. A slightly larger section missing from the doe above her head, some usual chips to the tips of the leaves on the other side and a couple of the leaves around the back are discoloured.
