Ornate Silver Caster, Horace Woodward & Co 1891
The perfect gift for the collector of unusual silver sugar casters or muffineers, a very ornate Victorian Norse horn inspired example by the excellent silversmiths Horace Woodward & Co (Edgar Finley & Hugh Taylor).
This very striking muffineer has a horn shaped body supported on scroll feet to the front and a stylized seabirds head to the rear extending to a looped handle terminating in a sea serpents head. The body is heavily decorated in repoussé with a foliate scrolling seaweed and seashell rococo design around a vacant cartouche to the upper front. The body is finished with a repoussé decorated screw on lid.
This very fine muffineer is Hallmarked for London 1891 on both the screw on lid and the body and both also carry the makers marks for Horace woodward & Co (Edgar Finley & Hugh Taylor)
This caster is 5.5 inches (14cm) high 4 inches (10cm) long, 2.5 inches (6cm) wide and weighs approximately 6.5 ounces (200g). The muffineer is in an excellent conditionn with no damage or repair, although there is a little bit of wear to the easily legible hallmarks.
