oak jointed chair with carvings - 19thC
An oak wainscot chair in the style of 17thC Lancashire carpenters, but probably of 19thC Victorian origin. Elegant carvings feature dragon and serpent as did many Lancashire chairs from 1630-1740. Probably commissioned by the helmeted & moustachioed gentleman in the header panel the carved arms feature roaring jaguars as symbols of power. The absence of any stretchers indicate that it was made for somebody quite short and may even have been built for a child (not all Wainscot chairs featured stretchers and there is no evidence of any stretchers having been removed from this chair).
