Naive School Oil On Canvas Of Cavalry Officer
Primitive school, naive school, the terms can be interchangeable. This Yeomanry Cavalry officer of the early 19th century falls into this category. The officer is wearing a Tarleton helmet which was worn around 1800 and his sword is a 1796 light cavalry pattern. In the distance, as he charges forward, a large country house can be seen in the background, most likely the officer’s house. As officers of the time often had to buy commissions they almost invariably came from wealthy, often landed, families.
The painting has craquleure throughout and the subject matter itself is very appealing. There has been an old repair to the bottom right near the trailing hoof. The painting has also been re-lined at some point in its life. Around the edges of the visible canvas, wear to the varnish can be seen but we prefer pieces like this to be untouched.
Measuring Canvas - 21” x 17 1/4” Overall with frame - 26” x 22”
