Mahogany Estate Cupboard
A handsome country house quality mahogany estate cupboard, with a well patinated brass rail around the top gallery, with two small twin door cupboards over two large twin door cupboards. The upper sections contain 10 pigeonholes each, while the lower cupboards have 8 larger pigeonholes in the right side with an open section below, and two shelves in the left side, one fixed and the other adjustable on wooden rests. The pigeonholes at the top have some original labels including letters of the alphabet and other indicators, such as “Councils” and “Churches & Schools”, while the bottom pigeonholes have more intriguing labels, including “Earl of Pembroke & Messrs Nicholl & Co”, and “Exors of Lord Herbert”. On top of the cupboard door on this side there is a registration number: 21322. The piece has carved decoration at various points, with shield top panel designs on the cupboard doors, and it sits on a plinth base.
This will be a good storage piece for a large room or a traditional professional office space, providing plenty of room for paperwork and files, but could also be repurposed as a sideboard or even make a good country kitchen dresser.
Dating to the 19th century, this is made of mahogany and originates from England.
In good age related condition, this has the normal small blemishes expected from age and use, but nothing obtrusive. There is a small hole at the top right which appears to have been for a fixing to keep it anchored. The key is available for the locks, which are all working.
Height – 159 cm
