J Sowerby 18th Century Longcase Grandfather Clock
A piece from the Andrew Hall collection, this wonderful longcase clock is from the late eighteenth century, circa 1790, and was made by J. Sowerby of Lancaster using the best materials. The mahogany case has an exquisite patina from years of careful polishing and the white dial is decorated with beautifully painted flowers, a handsome urn at the top and gold trim. Striking on the hour, the clock has a good 8-day movement.
It was common practice for English Lancastrian cabinetmakers to work as journeymen for Gillows, who were one of the finest furniture makers in the country, and then to set up their own businesses. These fine craftsmen would add their own personal touch to the pieces and there is a reference in the York Book of Prices that a Lancastrian workman was paid 18 shillings for a clock case! In this case, the clock cabinet is taken straight from a Gillows design of the period (see page 407 of “Gillows” by Susan Stuart) with a round top to the trunk door which is typically Lancastrian, and quarter columns with canted corners to the base.
Dating to circa 1790, the clock case is in mahogany and originates from Lancaster in England.
