This is a useful George V Sterling Silver Shell Dish. The dish is shaped as a scallop shell and stands on three ball feet. Traditionally these were used as butter dishes but it works just as well for sauces or accompaniments on the dining table, for nuts or snacks, as a trinket dish on a dressing table, for small items of stationery on a desk or for potpourri.

The shell dish was made by Josiah Williams & Co of Bristol and assayed in London in 1912. Josiah Williams & Co of Bristol were a hugely successful firm of silversmiths, the biggest in England outside of London, Birmingham and Sheffield. They traced their history back to Robert Williams succeeding to the business of William Woodman in around 1838. The firm passed through several generations of the Williams family becoming Josiah Williams & Co in 1879. Later partners included George Jackson and David Fullerton before they became a limited company in 1925. They finally ceased trading around 1940.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 110 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The dish is 13.4cm / 5.3ins from rim to handle, 10.5cm / 4.1ins across and stands 2.7cm / 1.1ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 77.8g / 2.7oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the upper side of the handle, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter r for 1912 and the G J over D F makers' mark for George Jackson and David Fullerton of Josiah Williams & Co.
