George III Silver Salt Spoon, Eley & Fearn, 1814 George III Georgian London %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Here we have a good quality George III Sterling Silver Salt Spoon in the classic Fiddle pattern. The bowl of the spoon is gilded to protect against salt corrosion. The top of the stem has an unusual crest of a bird standing a ram's horn elegantly engraved on to it.

The salt spoon is made by William Eley & William Fearn in London and dates to 1814. William Eley & William Fearn were part of a group of intertwined families including the Smiths and the Chawners who dominated silver flatware production for much of the 19th century. The two Williams were in business together between 1797 and the mid-1820s, with William Chawner joining them for a short period in the middle. Their flatware is always of very good quality.

Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents and just the minimal amount of superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 200 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The salt spoon is 10.5cm / 4.1ins long and weighs a very respectable 15.9g / 0.56oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letter T for 1814, the George III duty mark and the WE over WF makers' mark for William Eley & William Fearn.
