George III Silver Marrow Scoop, S. Hougham, 1816
This is a good quality George III Sterling Silver Marrow Scoop in the classic Fiddle pattern. It consists of a narrow scoop at one end with a broader scoop at the other and the Fiddle pattern stem between, all made from a single piece of silver. The initials R S in Old English style are engraved on the central stem.
The marrow scoop is made in London by highly regarded silversmith Solomon Hougham and dates to 1816. Solomon was the younger brother of Charles Hougham, a well established silversmith in the late 18th century who died in 1793, at which point Solomon took over the running of the business, continuing up until around 1819.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 205 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The marrow scoop is a well made piece in a good gauge of silver. It measures 22.2cm / 8.7ins long and weighs in at 55.2g / 1.9oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the central stem are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter a for 1816, the George III duty mark and the S H makers' mark for Solomon Hougham.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the marrow scoop.
