This is a good quality George III Sterling Silver Caddy Spoon in the classic Old English pattern. The caddy spoon is shaped as a small ladle and there are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The spoon is made in London by noted silversmith Richard Crossley and dates to 1790. Richard Crossley was a specialist spoon maker who registered his first mark at Goldsmith’s Hall in 1782. He made consistently good quality flatware right up until his death in 1815 and is always a name worth looking out for.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and only the most minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 233 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The caddy spoon is 8.7cm / 3.4ins long and 3.8cm / 1.5ins across the bowl. It weighs in at a respectable 13.7g / 0.48oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letter p for 1790, the George III duty mark and the R C makers' mark for Richard Crossley.
