Fine 17th Century Oyster Veneered Cabinet On Stand
FINE & RARE late 17th century olivewood oyster veneered cabinet on stand. The top section with a pair of doors with two curved drawers above finishing with a nice shape cornice. The doors are both inlaid with cross grain light coloured walnut banding in a curved geometric pattern. The ends are also all oysters with a cross grain walnut banding. The cabinet stand with one long drawer to the top in oysters with 6 turned and barley-twist legs in oak with wavy stretchers beneath and turned feet. The wavy stretchers veneered in walnut. In our opinion the vast majority of the stand is original.
The cabinet doors open to reveal a stunning all original fitted interior with drawers and a cupboard to the centre. All the interior also veneered in olive-wood oysters. The central cupboard door opens up to reveal small drawers on the back in plain olivewood veneer, the inside of the cupboard beautifully veneered in oysters to a great pattern. The handles are all gilded brass and are all original. The door locks are superb and also original.
The cabinet is a wonderful original colour with super patination throughout. There have been one or two minor old restorations as to be expected for a piece of this age but nothing significant and nothing detrimental.
We also found two pieces of paper inside with provenance of the house the cabinet original stood with pictures of where it stood in the drawing room. We have been unable to find out where it is at the moment but are still working on it.
Oyster veneered pieces of this stature very rarely come on to the market, especially in this condition. RARE.
