English Monarchs family tree by Albizzi c.1620 Albizzi English monarchs %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is a hand-coloured original copper engraving of the genealogical tree of English monarchs from Principum Christianorum stemmata by ALBIZZI, Antonio (1547-1626), published c.1620. It comes beautifully framed in gilt moulding with canvas slip.

The Principum Christianorum stemmata contained 46 full- or double-page illustrations of genealogies engraved by Custos Dominicus (Antwerp c.1560 – 1615 Augsburg). First published in Augsburg in 1612, this is the author's most celebrated work. The highly elaborate and decorative engravings show the family trees of the royal and noble houses of Europe incorporating portraits and coats-of-arms against a backdrop of city panoramas taken from Braun & Hogenberg's Civitates Orbis Terrarum.

The family tree of the English royal family commences with Matilda, the daughter of Henry I, whose second marriage was to Geoffrey of Anjou. Their son eventually succeeded to the English throne as Henry II in 1154. A third of the way up on the left-hand side of the trunk is an engraving of the destroyed Palace of Nonsuch, which Henry VIII had built in 1538 in the vicinity of Kingston-upon-Thames. Portraits of James I and his wife, Anna of Denmark, occupy the cartouche flanked by cherubs at the top left. Their three children, including Charles, who later became Charles I, are the last descendants to be shown on the family tree.

The Italian jurist and genealogist Albizzi was born in Florence in 1547. Little is known of his life. In 1576 he was in the service of Cardinal-Archduke Andreas of Austria. In 1585 he converted to Lutheranism. From 1608 on he spent the rest of his life in the Protestant Imperial City of Kempten (Bavaria), where he died in 1626.

Dimensions: 66 cm x 51.5 cm (26" x 20 1/4")

Condition: The engraving is in good condition without damage. The hand-colouring is later as this would have been published uncoloured. The frame is recent so is in excellent condition.

Postage and packing: This picture can be posted to anywhere within the UK for £15. However, to minimise the risk of breakage we would recommend having this delivered by our delivery man for £45.
