Edwardian Silver Stationery Box, S. Mordan & Co Edwardian Silver Stationery Box %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Here we have an unusual small Edwardian Sterling Silver Stationery Box. The oblong box has an upper compartment with a hinged lid and lower tray beneath it. The inside of the box was originally gilded and it may well have held a moistened sponge with stamps in the tray beneath. Today it is a useful desk top box for any small stationery items or for sewing accessories.

The top of the box is engraved with the dates 1893 - 1918, so it was presumably a gift to celebrate a 25th anniversary of some kind, perhaps 25 years of service with a company.

The stationery box was made in London by famous silversmiths Sampson Mordan & Co and dates to 1908, the engraving having clearly been done some 10 years later.

Sampson Mordan established his company in London in 1815 and in 1822 he was granted the world’s first patent for a mechanical pencil. It was these that would remain the backbone of the company’s fortunes. After a partnership with Gabriel Riddle from 1823 to 1836 was dissolved, the firm was renamed S. Mordan & Co, with Sampson’s sons, Sampson Jr and Augustus, taking over in 1843. Alongside their pencils business, the firm specialised in small silver novelties such as letter openers, bookmarks, decanter labels, pin cushions, inkwells and cigar cutters. In 1941 the factory was destroyed by enemy bombing and the firm ceased trading. They are one of the most widely collected of all silversmiths.

Condition is good with just a slight bend to the front corner of the lower tray. The gilding inside the box has largely been polished away with just an outer rim remaining. The hinge is in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The box is 6.1cm / 2.4ins wide, 5.6cm / 2.2ins deep and 2.6cm / 1in high. It weighs in at a substantial 88.1g / 3.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The box has full sets of well struck hallmarks on both the back and the inside of the box. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter n for 1908 and the S.M & Co makers' mark for Sampson Mordan & Co.

Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the box.
