Edwardian Silver Sovereign Case, Wm. Lewis, 1909
Here we have a very decorative Edwardian Sterling Silver Sovereign Case that holds both a full sovereign and a half sovereign. The outside of the case has all over chased floral decoration with a central blank cartouche. There is a ring for attachment to a chain.
The sovereign case is made in Birmingham by William Lewis and dates to 1909. Not much is known about William Lewis who only seems to have been active in the Edwardian decade and his mark is mostly found on cigarette cases and vestas.
Whilst this sovereign case has clearly seen regular use it is in good overall condition with no dings or dents. The clasp and hinge are both in full working order as are the spring mounted coin holders. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sovereign case is 5.7cm / 2.2ins wide, 2.7cm / 1in deep and 1.3cm / 0.5ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 29.5g / 1.04oz.
The full set of hallmarks on the inside of the lid are quite heavily rubbed and don't photograph well. With a magnifier you can read them as the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter k for 1909 and the W.L in conjoined circles makers' mark for William Lewis. In addition the coin holders have both the lion passant and the date letter k on them and the ring has the lion passant on it, so you can be sure this is Sterling Silver throughout.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery Parcel Post, which includes cover for the value of the sovereign case.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
