This is an attractive Edwardian Sterling Silver Cream Jug. The cream jug is of pedestal form with an acanthus topped scroll handle. The body of the jug has embossed scrolls and flowers surrounding a blank shield shaped cartouche on the front.

The cream jug was made in London by noted silversmith Charles Edwards and dates to 1902. The Edwards family were London silversmiths based in Clerkenwell, the heart of London’s silver manufacturing industry. William Edwards established the firm in 1865 and was followed by Thomas Edwards and Charles Edwards, the most renowned family member. The firm was taken over by Charles Eldridge in 1924 but continued to trade under Charles Edwards’ name until it finally closed in about 1960.

Condition is very good with just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The cream jug measures 8.7cm / 3.4ins from lip to handle, 5.2cm / 2ins across the body and stands 7.2cm / 2.8ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 58.5g / 2.06oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, just below the rim near the handle, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter g for 1902 and the C E makers' mark for Charles Edwards.
