Early 20th C. Silver Plate Serving Dish, J. Dixon Edwardian George V Silver Plate %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is a smart and practical early 20th century Silver Plate Serving Dish in the French Empire style. This shape of dish is often referred to as a muffin dish because of its shape but would be used on the dining table for whatever was needed at the time. The round dish has a thread and cross rim around the bottom half and a domed panelled lid. The handle is a loop of the matching thread and cross design with each end formed as an acanthus leaf. This "Empire" style deliberately took inspiration from Ancient Roman decoration.

The dish was made in Sheffield by cutlers, silversmiths and electroplaters James Dixon & Sons and dates to the period between around 1910 and 1920. With a history dating back to around 1806 when it was a partnership between James Dixon and Thomas Smith, James Dixon & Sons was one of Sheffield's foremost silversmiths and electroplaters, particularly noted for their relationship with designer Dr Christopher Dresser whose groundbreaking silver plate teapot designs for the company are still being reproduced today. They were highly successful and remained in business up until the mid 1980s when they were absorbed into British Silverware.

Condition is very good with no dings or dents, no significant plate loss and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 100 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The serving dish is 19.8cm / 7.8ins in diameter across the rim of the base and stands 10.5cm / 4.1ins high to the top of the handle. It weighs in at 701g / 24.7oz.

The marks on the underside of the rim are somewhat rubbed but can still be deciphered as the Gothic J D & S for James Dixon & Sons with theit trumpet and banner trademark on the opposite side of the rim. The inside of the lid is stamped with the registered design number 551724, which dates the original design to 1910.
