As pair of Chinese pottery Buddhist lions C 1900
A highly decorative pair of Chinese pottery Buddhist lions circa 1900.
An unusual pair of 19th century Chinese hand painted and richly glazed pottery seated Buddhist lions. They are each raised onto a stepped plinth with gilt character marks on the front face with bamboo and foliage around the sides and back on pale yellow dotted panels surrounded by boldly decorated boarders.
The left and right-handed lions form a true pair, each decorated in different colours. One with an open mouth expression and the other closed. Each is richly glazed in translucent colours highlighted with fine detailing and soft gilding.
They are both in good condition with light wear to some of the gilding.
Chinese, circa 1900
Height 24cm x width 13cm x depth 10cm
