Art Nouveau Silver Trinket Tray, H. Matthews, 1896
Here we have an attractive Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Trinket Tray. The tray is basically oblong with sweeping edges and raised pierced sides decorated with swirls and flowers.
The tray could be used on a dressing table for antique jewellery and accessories or would work equally well on a desk for pens, pencils or stationery.
The trinket tray was made in Birmingham by Henry Matthews and dates to 1896. Henry Matthews registered his mark in 1893 and ran his firm from premises in Vittoria Street in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter. He made a very wide range of good quality silverware and remained in business up until around 1930.
Condition is very good with just one truly tiny ding in the base plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 125 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tray measures 17.8cm / 7ins by 10.2cm / 4ins and stands 1.4cm / 0.55ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 75.9g / 2.68oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the join of the base and the sides, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter w for 1896 and the partly rubbed H M in separate squares makers' mark for Henry Matthews.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the tray.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
