Art Deco Silver Cigarette Box, Mappin & Webb, 1937
Here we have a very stylish Art Deco Sterling Silver Cigarette Box with a Cedar Wood interior. The box is oblong with plain silver sides and an engine turned top featuring Odeon style decoration. The cedar wood lining has a movable central divider to allow for cigarettes of different lengths.
Although originally intended for cigarettes, this is a versatile box that could be used to store anything today, such as antique jewellery, stationery, pens & pencils or whatever suits you.
The box is made by world famous silversmiths Mappin & Webb, perhaps the most famous of all English silversmiths and assayed in London in 1937. Founded in 1859 when John Newton Mappin left the family firm of Mappin Brothers, they became Mappin & Webb in 1868 and remained in the Mappin family until it was merged with Elkington & Co and Walker & Hall to form British Silverware in 1963.
Condition is extremely good with just one truly miniscule ding on the back rim of the lid and only the most minimal superficial surface wear. The cedar wood interior is also in very good condition. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The box measures 16.9cm / 6.6ins by 9cm / 3.5ins and stands 4.7cm / 1.8ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 444.7g / 15.7oz but this does of course include the cedar wood lining.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter B for 1937 and the Mn & Wb makers' mark for Mappin & Webb. There is also a retail stamp for Mappin & Webb and there is also a partial set of hallmarks on the underside of the thumb catch on the front of the lid.
Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cigarette box.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
