Aleksei Urievich Kravchenko Russian Oil Harbour
We are offering for sale this unusual, large oil on canvas by the Russian artist ALEKSEI URIEVITCH KRAVCHENKO, who has signed the painting in Cyrillic in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a harbour scene, possibly continental, with sailing boats moored against a quay, and three boats in the foreground. There is a cafe with coloured umbrellas to the right of the painting and some figures in the street leading down to the water.
The painting has been executed in Pointillism, a technique invented by Georges-Pierre Seurat and utilised by a group of artists, including Signac, Pissarro and Van Gogh, when branching out from Impressionism. The technique involved placing dots of pure colour near to each other, so that when viewed the eye causes them to merge into one another to create the subtle tones of the painting, which has been used to great effect here.
We have been unable to find any biographical information about the artist, other than the fact that he was born in 1966, but we have found out that he sold three watercolours at a Russian auction for reasonable prices. This painting was purchased at Christie's in 2011 for £500.
The painting is framed in a 3" gilt frame and is ready to hang.
