A Rare double fusee bracket clock by W.J Upjohn c1 %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This rare flame mahogany and boxwood inlay bracket antique clock was made by the famous Exeter and London clockmaking family of Upjohn. W.J Upjohn had premises in 11 St John’s Square, London and only worked from 1815-1820. This Lancet shaped case has very unusual and rare gilt fretwork panels to the arch making a very pleasant change from the usual. Upjohn clearly had the same eye for quality the family was famous for, displaying fire gilt lion head handles and fretwork panels. The fine boxwood inlay is exquisite and is finished with ebonised triple rod corner columns finished with gilt capitals to the top and bottom. The very well made five knopped pillar movement features fine wheel work, levers and beautifully shaped crutch that embraces the long pendulum. The clock has the desired “silence” lever behind the cast bezel to stop any noise when needed. The movement is finished with a well engraved cartouche with W.J Upjohn London within. The clock is well proportioned being 19” (48cm) high and 11” (28cm) wide, not too tall as some lancet antique clocks can be. Being able to date the clock to within five years 1815-20 makes this George III clock a good example of this period. With over twenty years experience in restoring and conserving clocks and working on some of the finest and complicated clocks for a select group of the best antique clock dealers in the country.
