A 16th Century Gothic Carved Oak Board Chest
A Late 16th Century Board Chest With Possible Links To The National Trust Property Townend In Cumbria.
The single plank top showing signs of originally having an applied moulded edge over front with Bold roundels to each end carved with the Star of David with a central flower in a church window fashion flanking a later lockplate that sits above twin lancets with a gothic inverted omega symbol.
The star of David is two triangles one pointed up and the other pointed down to represent, as above, so is below. This is a symbol of heaven and earth and the inverted omega could have a reference to alpha and omega (the beginning and the end) as in the book of revelation.
The plain sides with cusped arch cut outs and a plain back board ,the spandrels to the front are later and the hinges are also later.
To the back is an old label which reads Townend 4 ,this is a war depository label (houses had treasured items removed and put into safe storage during the war )my research has located Townend as a property now run by The National Trust in Cumbria and as II originally purchased this chest 6 years ago in Scotland it has not travelled far.
Standing high at 28.5" it certainly makes a statement.
50" Wide
16" Deep.
A chest that requires further research as II am sure there is more to reveal.
Great surface colour and natural patina .
Shop open Thursday -Saturday or by appointment ,please call before arriving and I will make sure I am available
